Achieving my Writing Goal
Alba has been working really hard during our Literacy sessions. She is getting very good at writing more than one sentence to explain her stories. She is ready to move onto a new goal.
Alba has chosen her new goal to be using interesting words to make her writing sparkle. This means that Alba will need to describe her writing more e.g. skinny dog, colourful ball etc
Keep being a great author, Alba

Our houses
Alba and I made some houses. One house is made of triangle blocks and it is a hotel. It has three bedrooms.
The other house is made of paper and boxes and it is a gingerbread house. We used a box to hold the paper together because the house kept falling down.
We were playing families with the houses. We visited each other's house.

Snakes and Ladders
![]() |
In a maths workshop some of the children were learning how to count in twos, fives, tens. We went outside and used the numbers on the snakes and ladders grid to help us learn our goal.
The next day Darcy, Jesse and Alba went outside and played Snakes and Ladders using a large dice Jesse had found. When Mrs Johnson went outside to see what they were playing she was amazed how they were independently playing snakes and ladders and how they were all following the rules of the game. Each player was supporting each other to count on and move to the right number which was a bit tricky as the numbers on the dice went up to nine!

Writing Workshop
Today, Alba came to a workshop to work on her writing goal. She is learning to write more than one sentence to explain what is happening in her stories. We used our Peppa Pig magnets to create a picture. Then Alba shared the sentences she wanted to write with her group. She used the magnetic words and her word card to record her sentences.
'Peppa Pig and Mrs Pig is going to a fair. George and Daddy Pig is going to get a balloon'.

Author's Chair 2
Alba was working really hard during Write to Self time.
She was using her word card to help her find words.
You are a great author, Alba!
Achieving my Writing Goal
Alba has been working really hard on her writing goal of hearing the first sounds in words and writing them down. She is able to write sentences more independently with this skill.
Alba has chosen her next writing goal and is now working on trying to write more than one sentence in her stories.

An Alien
This is my alien.
The marbles and the toothpaste lids are the hair on my alien. The skin is very smooth and cold and made out of stones. My alien has two short pink legs. It also has spikes on her sides. She lives on a planet somewhere called planet Bong. This alien has come to visit me. I am going to play games with my alien. When we have finished playing my alien will go back home to her planet.

Six Layer Cake
Alba has been persevering on her writing goal, which is to record the initial sounds of words. Today at library time, we read a story about a wolf who wanted to make Chicken Stew. The wolf baked lots of yummy food for the chicken to fatten it up. We wondered what delicious recipes we would bake if we were the wolf. In our workshop, we decided on a recipe we would cook if we were the wolf. This is Alba's recipe for Six Layer Cake. It has strawberries, butter and flour in it. Look at all those beginning sounds Alba has written down. Great work!

Patterns At Home

I made these patterns. I did dress patterns and I skipped numbers and I did coloured flowers in a pattern. I also did house patterns. We learned about patterns at Friday Surprise day and I tried it at home.

Music Pattern
For Friday Surprise Day, we continued our exploration into patterns. Today we used music to create a pattern. Can your child explain their pattern? Can you make a new pattern together?
Achieving My Writing Goal

Alba has been persisting on her Writing Goal of using resources to find words. "I can use my word card to help me find letters and words. I can find words like on, is, the, and, like." " And I can use my alphabet card to help me find letters like a for snake." This is Alba's new goal. She is going to listen to and record the initial sounds of words. Fantastic goal setting Alba!

Comparing Houses
Friday, 24 March 2017
Our Houses

On our Friday Surprise Day we have been looking at a variety of houses and what makes them similiar and what makes them different. Our buddy and I made a house out of playdough. We didn't peek at our buddies house while we created them but when we finished we compared our houses.
"Alba and Autumn's houses have a swimming pool but not Charley's house. Alba's house has a round big swimming pool and Autumn's pool is a oval shape. Alba's house is different because it has stairs to get to the top floor. Autumn and Charley's houses are the same because they have no stairs. Alba's and Autumn's houses have a few windows but Charley's house has more windows. Autumn's house is different because it doesn't have a chimney. Charley's house has window shutters but the others don't."

My Story About Rapunzel

"I wrote a story about a princess and when I wrote it I used my word card to find words. That is my writing goal."
Making A Sign

"My sign says open and closed. It was easy to make the letters."
Using words around the classroom Alba was able to make the letters from playdough. Many of the other children came over to Alba's playdough words and asked her what they said.

The Boat Challenge
Here is a picture of Alba with her boat.
I made my boat out of an egg container, cardboard for the sails and sticks to hold up the sail.
When the boat went in the water the cardboard got wet and it broke. I wouldn’t use cardboard again. I am going to try to use sticks for the sail. I could sellotape it together. I wouldn't use an egg container because it got wet.

Puzzles
![]() |
Alba and Autumn spent a great deal of time together this morning co-operating to complete a variety of puzzles. The other learners in the classroom were very impressed with how quickly they could do the puzzles. This inspired some of the other children to have a go completing a puzzle. We certainly have two puzzle experts in our room! |

Mystery Hero

Today Alba was the mystery hero. She was a fabulous class member and helped others to pack up before morning tea. Alba was also very brave and stood in front of the school at our Whakangahau. Super Hero work Alba!
My Puppet

Here is a picture of Alba and her puppet, Riley. Te Kakano made puppets for Friday Surprise Day and our Whakangahau. We had to think about all the parts our puppets would need. We also had to show persistence to make sure the parts stayed on and looked how we planned it.
"It was hard to get to stick the hair on because it kept getting in the way while I was trying to glue it on. I kept trying and then it didn't get in my way. I used little pom-poms for decoration for a dress. I used hair to make his nose. I put on a love heart to make the jacket."

In class we made a pretend picnic for the teddy bears. So I decided to make a teddy bear out of play dough. I used lots of play dough. I decorated her with bows. Her name is Rosie.

Beach Day

Alba and her friends spent a long time making sand castles. They used different sized containers to help build layers. They even found a large piece of seaweed for decoration.
"I liked building a BIG sand castle with my friends Autumn and Lily."

After we had our lunch, Te Kakano went for a swim in the sea. Alba and her friend Autumn had a wonderful time splashing in the waves, despite the cold!
"I would like to do more splashing in the sea because it was lots of fun."
